Former Olympic gymnast Cathy Rigby will be speaking at the State Theatre in New Brunswick on Wednesday, April 18th. She’ll be the fourth woman to grace the stage this season in the SmartTalk conversation series following Jane Goodall, Donna Brazile, and Frances Mayes. Like the others, she’ll be on hand to share her life story, tracing her steps from a budding gymnast to a Broadway star.
Ms. Rigby turned to gymnastics as an escape from her alcoholic father. Her talent and determination resulted in her capturing a spot on the 1968 U.S. Olympic Team, and then on to win a silver medal on the balance beam in 1970 at the World Gymnastics Championships, all at a time of Eastern European dominance.
At 15 she turned to bingeing and purging, and became anorexic and bulimic, nearly dying twice. She retired from gymnastics, got married, and gave birth to two sons. Staying in a sports-related field, she became a commentator for ABC Sports.
Rigby divorced, sought medical assistance, and began a new career as an actress and singer. She earned rave reviews as Peter Pan. Her story of perseverance will inspire you to soar higher than the character she’s played on Broadway.
