McCarter Theatre recently previewed their upcoming season, which includes theater, cabaret, dance, music, jazz, and signature events. I don’t know why it just hit me that McCarter is really Broadway, Off-Broadway, Lincoln Center, the Carlyle, and Madison Square Garden all rolled up into one tidy package in the heart of town. That’s pretty amazing in suburbia. Especially because of the high-caliber of the performances.
A nice selection was reveled, but not ALL performances are set yet since some artists don’t know their schedules so far in advance. With that said, here’s the sneak peek into McCarter’s 2012 – 2013 season.
Theater
A Delicate Balance by Edward Albee will be directed by Emily Mann, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is a Chekov-inspired play by Christopher Durang and will be directed by Nicholas Martin, and Shakespear’s The Winter’s Tale will be directed by Rebecca Teichman (who also directed last season’s Sleeping Beauty Wakes). Two others are still to be announced.
Cabaret
Jarrod Spector, Barbara Cook, Ben Vereen, and Betty Buckley
Dance
Pennsylvania Ballet, State Ballet Theatre of Russia – Cinderella, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Meryl Tonkard – The Oracle, Mark Morris Dance Group, and Momix
Music
The Silk Road Ensemble (Yo-Yo Ma artistic director), Bach’s Brandenburgs, Hilary Hahn violin/Valentina Lisitsa piano, Mitsuko Uchida piano, and Subscriber bonus event: Tenebrae
Jazz
Chuck Corea and Gary Burton, Vijay Iyer Trio, Geri Allen Trio, Monterey Jazz Festival Tour, and Subscriber bonus event: The Princeton University and Julliard Jazz Ensembles
Signature Events
There are too many to list, so here are just a few: Cameron Carpenter, Bela Fleck’s Banjo Summit, Cirque Shanghai – Bai Xi, The Cheftains with Paddy Moloney, The Laurie Berkner Band, Kodo Drummers, and David Sedaris
Wow. What a fantastic line up of events — so exciting. I am especially looking forward to Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike. I have long been a Chekov fan and am more recently a Durang fan … this sounds like perfection to me. Who needs to NYC when you have McCarter in town.
That’s exactly what I think. I think many area people realized how great McCarter is after 9/11. Fewer were going into the city and enjoying what Princeton has to offer. They really offer quality performances. I think a few voiced the desire to have a musical, and they do try to have them when possible.
